The Situation

An unsettled southwest flow prevails over Aotearoa/New Zealand today. On Monday, a ridge of high pressure moves onto the country from the Tasman Sea.On Tuesday, a ridge remains positioned over northern New Zealand, while a front, preceded by a moist northwest flow, moves onto the southern South Island. On Wednesday, a low is forecast to develop along the front as it slowly moves northward across southern New Zealand. At the same time, the ridge over northern New Zealand shifts eastward. By Thursday, the front and its associated low continue tracking north, while a southwest flow develops behind. A brief secondary front is also expected to move onto the southern South Island before quickly exiting to the east.
