The Situation
A rapidly deepening low and associated fronts move today onto New Zealand from the Tasman Sea, bringing heavy rain and northwest gales. On Saturday, a complex trough in the Tasman Sea moves eastwards across New Zealand, with northwest gales and heavy rain affecting the country. This complex trough clears the upper North Island during Sunday morning, while another cold front moves onto southern New Zealand and is expected to move quickly northeast onto central New Zealand later in the day, bringing a strong cold southwest change. On Monday, the front moves up eastern areas of the North Island, with cold southwesterlies behind it, followed by a ridge over New Zealand later in the day and through Tuesday, while a weak trough develops just east of Northland.
